Unrest: Back To The Roots
Unrest - Back To The Roots - [Massacre Records]

2007-02-07

I know what some people are going to say about this album, its cheesy. It's cheesy German metal with all the usual ingredients and lyrics such as "Bang Your Head". Prizes for originality they ain't gonna get.

But now to the point, this is some great tasting cheese indeed. The band's almost 20 year old career is evident in each and every track on this album, these guys can play, they don’t over complicate the tracks, they create catchy and solid metal songs, and that's probably all a melodic metal album like this needs.

The first track "Go To Hell" sets the pace, it's heavy and melodic, with vocals that have a certain raw edge, like a more settled version of later Accept or current U.D.O.
This is heavy metal, but with a speed metal attitude. The second track – "Bang Your Head" may come off as a Manowar clone, but it's still a lot of fun, again, not too complex or mature, but that's what 80's metal is all about – power, and there's a lot of that in the track.

It's great to hear a veteran band strut their stuff while managing to sound as fresh at this, it has no aspirations to sound modern or cutting edge, these guys just do metal music, without any foreign influences, a track like "Breaking The Chains" again shows off all the band's strengths, good playing ability, strong vocals, and a classy production.

This isn’t for any taste, this is oldschool melodic metal without the current aggression or trends that some younger metal fans may expect, but for me, someone who grew up listening to 80's metal, this is a real treat.
