Knights Of The Abyss: Shades
Knights Of The Abyss - Shades - [Ferret Music]

2008-06-25

Knights Of The Abyss's second full-length release sees that band continuing to explore their brand of groove-filled deathcore, throwing in the usual melodic death metal riffs and breakdowns a-la The Black Dahlia Murder while combining it with a groovier and somewhat more melodic approach.

I can't fault their playing, the riffs are top-notch, the guitar leads are solid, and the drum work is fucking impressive, but I can't shake the feeling that these guys are a bit reluctant to really step on the pedal on taking things into the logical extremes that their ability allows them to reach.

A New Darkened Faith is a good combination of the elements that work in the band, but it still lacks that blast of aggression that actually arrives with the second track- Whorror Storm, which combines fast tempos, and secondary vocals with a lower, more death-metal pitch.

Again, it's still a kick-ass band, and anyone even remotely into aggressive deathcore that wants some melody and groove served with his aggression will enjoy, maybe it's the sound that makes them quite digestible and softens the impact somewhat, since the more I listened to the album the more I liked it, perhaps a thicker and sharper sound will give them that extra "kick the listener in the teeth" vibe I wanted.
