Cales: Savage Blood
Cales - Savage Blood - [Metal Breath Production]

2008-02-12

Cales is a solo project from guitarist Peter "Blackie" Hosek- known best for his work with Root- an old-school black metal band from the Czech Republic. However, Cales is an instrumental atmospheric rock/metal album.

I'd like to begin with the fact that this is something different from what I'm used to-Savage Blood sounds very basic-it is mostly quiet and quite slow, like something you would put in the background when you don't want to be disturbed to much..
This is a guitar orientated melodic piece of work, while drums and keyboards are present but keep out of the way. Many moments in the album will sound to you like a walk in the woods-a soft metal version of those "sounds of nature" relaxation CDs- and for that purpose-it does well, being calm and soothing. Musically, there's nothing very special here and nothing really stands out, but this doesn't mean it's boring.

I wouldn't really call this one a metal album, although it contains metal moments- there's some folk, Viking, rock and pop.
While some of the tracks are very well composed, others seem like an afterthought, but All things considered- it's a nice, harmless album that does what it's meant to do-
And that's providing a background.

Enjoy!
