War From A Harlots Mouth: Transmopolitan
War From A Harlots Mouth - Transmopolitan - [LifeForce Records]

2007-09-25

I'll come out with this straight away; I'm not a big fan of tech-core bands. Once we have that out of the way I think my review of this album will be better understood.

First thing, these guys don't really bring anything new to the table, but just the fact they come from Germany and the US is surprising, these bands usually don’t come out of Europe, maybe just the forefathers of the genre – the mighty Meshuggah.

Still, you won't notice it. The music is a prefect combination of DEP aggression, Meshuggah time signatures, Ion Dissonance – well, Dissonance, and The Red Chord heaviness. Meaning – tech core by the book, all of that is hit with the right smidgen of Jazz that DEP and Ephual Death incorporate into their music.

So technically, this guys are untouchable, they are frighteningly impressive players, they change more rhythms and riff than 5 other bands put together, and they throw in the Jazzy elements at just the right moments to make this interesting, and not just scary. So what's not to like?

Well, if you're into tech core – nothing, it's a masterpiece in that Dept., but if you're into soul in your music, or melody, or structure that you can understand – stir away. Me, I like some soul in my brew and this as cold and efficient as music gets.
