Immortal Avenger: Sound The Alarm
Immortal Avenger - Sound The Alarm - [Self-released]

2007-06-19

You know you're in for a traditional metal release when the first track in this 5 song EP is the title track, and the second track bears the name of the band.

Another very clear thing is that the 4 guys from Immortal Avenger, a Virginian trad metal outfit who's this is its second release, listen to a lot of Iron Maiden, and I'm talking about a steady diet, not just an occasional dish. To an avid Iron Maiden fan like me it's certainly a good thing, but basically it means that if you dislike Iron Maiden or oldschool American power metal, you're more than likely to dislike these guys too.

Me? I was hooked the moment the Iron Maiden riff in "Sound The Alarm" kicked in, the track combines the simple aggression and melody of classic power metal with these strong Iron Maiden touches, and even includes a slower, quite bridge section that adds some sophistication to the mix; it's just the perfect combination this music needs.

It's doesn’t really change too much after that, and that's a good thing. The band belts one strong melodic number after the other, some solid musicianship all-round, and though vocalist John Throckmorton (ex-Alabama Thunderpussy) isn’t the one and only human air raid siren, he's still a good melodic vocalist with a strong voice that ties this all up together nicely.

Actually these guys had me the moment that first Iron Maiden riff kicked in, a warm fuzzy feeling in the gut is all you need to feel in order to know this is one album you're going to like.
