Gallhammer: The Dawn Of...
Gallhammer - The Dawn Of... - [Peaceville Records]

2007-05-08

Oh man, the things I have to endure…

Gallhammer are a three female unit from Japan, playing what can be described as primitive black metal and crust, heavily leaning more into the latter. The influence by such innovators as Hellhammer is evident in the music as well as in the name, but that's about where the similarity ends.

While Hellhammer were innovators, path-finders, a hellish combo of dark metal and doom filled creations, Gallhammer come off more like a punk band that can't really play, and couldn’t write a song to save their lives. Most tracks on this CD, more of a showcase of their inaptitude than a real album, sound the same – thick, distorted guitar lines, severely under produced (most are just rehearsal material), with two females shouting in a variety of annoying voices…and that's about it.

Tracks all bear evil sounding names, like "May Our Father Die" or "Speed Of Blood", but they could’ve been named "Stairway To Heaven" for all I care, they all sound like the same bunch of rubbish.

There's a DVD here, too. It's actually a filming of some of their shows using one hand-held camcorder, with sound as good as can be expected, and the material as interesting as watching a prostate go old, you get the drift. The only interesting side of it is that the girls look like that killer ghost from "The Grudge", but that doesn’t justify watching the thing..

People who are into genital torture and self-mutilation will probably enjoy it, but others won't. Believe me.
