Julie Doiron, who is most familiar as the "
Eric's Trip" (great psychedelic folk band that broke up around 1996, go check it out!) bass player, is releasing a new solo album "Woke myself up". All of her old band members contributed to the album, playing for the first time since they split, but still, it remains a Julie Doiron solo album.
In her seventh studio full length, Julie still does great work outdooring her feelings through a wide spectrum of musical textures and contextual layers. Every song, every line in this album is dripping with real live emotions. Getting us as close as possibly to her own true state of feeling.
"Woke myself up", the opening track, is an actual musical wake up call. For Julie, it's a wake up call from her somewhat naïve concept view of the world. In the next track "You look so alive" she already takes the beat down a notch, with a more intimate composing and lines like "when we pass in the street\I won't look away\if you don't look away" - Those are just inch examples I can give that are the reason why this album is so touching and soothing.
Rick White (another "Eric's Trip" ex member) takes not only the role of an instrument player, but also a producer. Their re-connection is probably the key reason for this album to be so raw and packed with meanings.
The diversity and the right usage of musical ability's of every one who took part in this album is a contribution to its edgy yet fragile sound. Very much recommended to people that already have artists like
Joni Mitchell,
Cat Power and
Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins in their CD collection.
