Mykorrhiza: Northern Remembrance
Mykorrhiza - Northern Remembrance - [Konqueror Records]

These death metallers' third album has at least one thing going for it - one of the best album covers I've seen lately. Musically it's a bit more complex than that, but at least they're starting off with a positive aspect.

I didn’t get a chance to listen to the first two albums, but this album is certainly not an easy album to take in, though death metal as a whole, it has all kinds of different elements that seem to set it apart from standard European death metal, melodic or otherwise, including clean vocals, some thrashy riffs, some hardcore elements, and even some doom - as I said, it's not as clear cut as can be expected.

The album starts off with one of the most varied tracks, "Release My Aggression", which combines death metal riffs and aggression with some cleaner vocals, not a bad track, but far from being the best track here. "Fate Identity" is purer death metal, quite similar to some classic American death metal.
The best tracks here are, in my opinion, the fastest ones, such as "Hate" and "Entering", both containing some strong black metal riffing and deadly blast-beats, when this band sets in mind an aggressive mood, I think that's the best way the it can go.

Though clearly a solid album, it does turn out to be a bit of a mixed bag at times, too many different influences for their own good, when they deal in clear cut heaviness they kick ass, the fine sound and good musicianship help the band as well, but they need to better focus their sights.
