Scars: The Nether Hell
Scars - The Nether Hell - [Self-released]

2006-12-31

While real thrash is almost non-existent in most of the world, with new genres like metalcore taking the lead, Brazil's thrash scene is still going strong. After being responsible for such greats as Sepultura and Sarcofago, today's thrash scene has another winner in the form of Scars, one fast, thrashy combo, with a real speedy concoction here, a solid 6 track EP.

Scars' thrash can mostly be described as hyper-fast and merciless. From the opening of the first track it's quite clear this isn’t melodic speed or mid-paced, its throttle on, peddle to the meddle stuff. The vocals are of the half-growled variation, with a bit of melody but mostly centered on aggression.

The guys can play, and even though the drums come off a bit over polished, almost like a drum machine, the album is very well produced. The only thing is there's very little in the way of variation here. The best track is probably the title one, which has some slower tempos and atmospheric riffs.

This is definitely oldschool, there's no modern neo-thrash riffing here, it borrows heavily from some of the classic death/thrash bands, but it's certainly cleaner and better produced than most of those past bands.

I can easily recommend this for thrash aficionados, though anyone in for a more melodic and varied effort will not find it here, this is for more aggression-oriented thrashers.
