Deathcon: Monotremata
Deathcon - Monotremata - [Dark Essence Records]

2006-12-16

Deathcon are actually yet another vehicle for V'gandr, bassist and vocalist for such acts as Aeternus, Helhiem, Ravengod and Cult of Catharsis. Musically, it's quite similar to Aeternus, but not as black metal oriented, its closer to oldschool death metal with some added elements as well.
I have to say I'm impressed by the amount of music this guy is able to produce, but while I like Helheim and Aeternus, I didn’t connect as well to Deathcon's debut.

Performing their death metal with aggression and quite a strong technical ability, the album is marred by an uneven production, while in certain points it sound adequate, even if a bit on the underground level, in other parts some of the guitar riffs are lost inside the mix and do not their place in the music.

The music, too, is uneven, while the opener is no more than an average death number; tracks such as the title song have some brilliant moments in them, some very strong riffs and a drum attack which is continually aggressive throughout the album.

"Delusions Of Grandeur" has a darker, almost doom feeling to it, it reminded me of early Celtic Frost with vocals that come off like early Deicide, there's also something of a Viking riff following the opening, giving it quite an epic feel, this is also probably the best track on the album for me.

To summarize, It certainly a dark and unflinching album, brutal and quite primitive in its presentation, but I did feel it didn’t have the same impact as, let's say, the last Aeternus album .
