Abonos: Abonos
Abonos - Abonos

2006-09-13

Sadly there are almost no metal bands from Serbia and Montenegro that break through in the European scene, although I had the pleasure listening to several talented bands from there. Abonos are one, a Goth metal bands with twin female vocals that infuse Nightwish melodies with heavier guitar work and some prog keyboard elements.

The band debut sounds good, is well played and has some nice vocals courtesy of the two female vocalist and the make additions by the band's bassist, the main thing that hinders the album is the production, which is bearable at times, and horrible in other bits, a good, crisp production would have done wonders for this album.

The usual elements in a female fronted Goth band are here, operatic female singing, a large dosage of keyboards, some good guitar riffs and a lot of atmosphere, the band should probably use more English and less of their native tongue in the songs if they aim for an international audience, but most of the time it doesn’t hurt them too much.

One surprise here, a nice cover of Lorna McKennit's classic All Souls Night, the female vocals shine here, but it would have sounded much better with a really big production with some classic instruments as well, as it is, its still good and quite enjoyable, but it feels it could’ve been much better still.
