Steep: Silence Is Not Golden
Steep - Silence Is Not Golden - [Dies Irae Records]

2006-09-13

Finland's Steep have created quite a well put and well played neo-thrash album here, their first full length, fans of The Haunted and Denmark's Hatesphere will certainly find them appealing enough.

Most motifs here work well, good thrashy riffs, an excellent sound, a strong vocalist with a half-growl that really reminded me of The Haunted, there's a healthy dose of aggression here with an equal amount of technicality.

Best track here, in my opinion, is the third – Thousand Years, with Rise being a close second, the tuned down guitars put a modern spin on the band's basically traditional thrash, with the almost metalcore vocals infusing even more aggression. One thing I would add is another facet to the vocals, they tend to sound somewhat flat at times, some color would spice things up.

The extra three songs do not sound as good as the complete album, but they still are a nice bonus. The band still needs to add more ingredients into the mix, but its still a very good addition to the current Neo-thrash scene.
