Ilium: Permian Dusk
Ilium - Permian Dusk - [Adrenaline]

2006-09-13

Australia's Ilium have concocted quite a powerful album here, a combination of classic sounding NWOBHM a-la classic Iron Maiden with some Euro-power metal thrown in as well. Band members are veterans all, and the album is well-played, also benefiting from vocalist Lord Tim's powerful vocals.

Vacuous starts off the album well enough, its not one if its strongest cuts but it does have some nice riffing and good lead work, I had a bit of a problem with the guitar sound, came off as plastic, but either I got used to it or it sounded better on the second track – the much better "An Odyssey Through Time", which has all of the band's strengths in it, including a really good performance by Tim.

One of the two best tracks here is next, Chloroform Divinity has a great, simple keyboard line going for it, strong verses, it has the Iron Maiden feel in it but sounds quite heavier. The following track is the second best; the title track has a great galloping riff and its one of the album's most memorable cuts. Jaundiced With Fear bring in the Euro metal influences, sounding a bit like Germany's Running Wild, its still a lot of fun.

Apart from the sometimes imperfect sound this is an enjoyable ride all the way, classic melodic metal with a real quality feel to it, and I enjoyed it.
