Tenebre are a gothic metal band, or gothic rock band, whichever you prefer, they actually state on their website that on this, their latest album they "moved away from their metal roots". Now, as any tree would tell them, moving away from one's roots in a fine way to wither and die, and I'm afraid that's what happens to this album.
They have everything nailed shut, the Goth look, the hat wearing male band member, two great looking female band members, the low, deep male vocals, the right use of keyboards, the right sound, but, alas, they don’t have enough good songs.
Tracks are catchy, no one can fault "Mistress Of The Dark" for its easily conceived hooks, but it feels lifeless, without any flare, the guitars sound flat and dry, the deep Goth vocals come off as boring, it just doesn’t float, sorry.
"Serpent's Fire" has some redeeming features, as does "Shine" with its electro rhythm and nice chorus, but its just not enough to make this album worthwhile, it fails where many Goth rock albums do, they just can't maintain an interest, and that's a shame.
