Deathbound: Doomsday Comfort
Deathbound - Doomsday Comfort - [Dynamic Arts Records]

2006-02-04

It was about a year ago that I reviewed Deathbound's last album, To Cure The Sane With Insanity. This, their newest album, spews forth another harsh slab of death-grind, this time in a different label (Dynamic Arts Records), and with a different sound, courtesy of the late, lamented Nasum's main man Mieszko Talarczky, who's this is the last album he recorded and mixed.

Several differences between this album and the one that preceded it, the sound, of course, its much harsher, similar to Nasum's, the music in the last album had some black metal riffing In it, here its more plainly death metal oriented, with some hard core elements as well, I tracks such as For The Rats its most evident, but as a whole, the band still makes the most extreme music, no holds barred, and vocalist Kai is still one of the genre's loudest screamers, sending the music that's already on edge, over the top and into complete madness territory.

90% of the material uses blast beats, making the band one of the most consistently fast bands I know, yet in several tracks they drop the rhythm a bit and go into death metal, tracks such as Inside The Nothingness and Take Left use some slower, atmospheric death metal riffs to get the message across.

Another nice idea the band has is the use of movie samples to start off some of the tracks, their use adds another dimension to a musical genre that is not known for its depth.

I still cant decide if this album is better than the band's first release, it has more diversity and maturity, but I'm not sure if the sound fits them better than the one on their debut, but in any case, this is no light music, the band remains one of the most extreme metal bands active, and their brand of death/grind-core is one of the potent ones I've heard, its well worth a listen.
