Sethery: Kholera
Sethery - Kholera - [Wood Cut Records]

2005-07-18

Sethery are a Finnish band that this is their debut album, it does not contain anything too new or surprising, but it does contain some high quality black/death metal, done with conviction and professionalism.

The band, lacking in any other comparison points, are a bit similar to early Dimmu Borgir, meaning, black metal with keyboards, with vocals that sound more death metal in nature, that is, before Dimmu Borgir incorporated symphonic elements and grandiose sound in their albums.

The main focal point for them, is the great guitar work, some truly brilliant riffs shine through the album, with the one is Mindblast Cholera being one of the best,
Impasse And Lick Of The Serpent, is as long as its name points out, and it also contains some good riffing, and high quality keyboard work, it brings to mind the keyboards of Children Of Bodom, but its not as prominent or virtuosic as that, mostly used to accentuate the solid guitar work.

Vocals are another plus; not exactly black metal in nature, but a middle-range growl, quite clear, and it also serves the album well in making it a bit more diverse then a million other black metal bands.

The album may not be a ground-breaker, but its certainly very listenable, well-played, and has maturity and quality that is quite rare in a debut album.
