Tombthroat: Bloodred History
Tombthroat - Bloodred History - [Twilight Distribution]

2007-06-26

This is this German death/grind band's third full length release, and I have to say it's quite a pleasant surprise. Brutal, well played, coherent, none of that modern metalcore/melodic death that just about spills out of my ears lately; it's oldschool death metal with enough aggression and brutality for anyone's sick taste.

From the aggressive title track things never lay down, it's one fast and brutal track after the other, with some strong riffs and a very solid rhythm section. The vocals are growls from every kind and form, fitting in well with the overall relentless attack in this album. The sound, too, is quite strong and clear, the only problem I had with it that in some of the snare bits it came off as too clear, a bit like a drum machine, but it doesn’t really hurt the album.

Possibly the best track here is "Hypnotized", almost thrashy riffs and everyone in the group is at the top of his game, a fine example of why this oldschool death attack works. Some people might prefer the shorter tracks later in the album, which inject even more aggression into the band's music.

Just a short remark, the cover doesn’t do justice for the band, it's a pretty nice piece of artwork, but it won't sell any albums for them. Something far gorier would probably draw more death-heads to buy this, the music inside is well worth the effort.
