Pin Pin Sugar: Latex Duellos
Pin Pin Sugar - Latex Duellos - [Bar La Muerte]

2003-05-22

Probably taking their name from a Sneaker Pimps song , only dropping the "S" before the "PIN" , these Italian psychos have nothing to do with sugar coated trip hop. With 36 songs , clocking at 36 minutes, Pin Pin Sugar delight us with their tasteful interpertation of the outgrowing prog-core scene.

Prog-core , not neo-prog, there's a difference. While bands from both these sub genres of progressive rock listened to a lot of King Crimson and Pink Floyd , the prog-core bands were and still are open minded and don't delimit themselves with only virtuosity and technique. That's why you'll have trouble finding similarity between Marillion and Flying Luttenbachers , for example. The prog core bands are more willing to experiment and are not ashamed to drag their influences from basic and simple three chords hard core/ punk as well as from monstrous progressive acts like Magma. In a way , the current prog-core scene is making big steps by keeping the true spirit of the Recommended/Rock In Opposition scene that was one the most important scenes of avant garde music in the 70's and 80's.

Pin Pin Sugar kick off with a Slint like opening before a groovey bass line in the vein of Tony Levin, inject some structure to the chaos. Before you know it, you've already reached track 8 , mainly because this album is like a one long jam , that almost never complete a full stop , but rages with Pin Pin Sugar's endless improvisations and breaks of the beat. The melodic parts here are beautiful as well , but they are being crushed and twisted by totaly accurate and disharmonic guitar parts and a wild saxophone. One of the greatest tracks here is the last one. It appears after almost 2-3 minutes of complete silence , and it has the feel of idm track ,but it's played by the organic instruments that took part in this recording , with no electronic gadgets. This track is short and brilliant and it's only a tiny microcosm to prove this whole album to be a solid mathematical rock achievement.
