Unsoul: Welcome To Amnesia
Unsoul - Welcome To Amnesia - [Unsigned]

It's a bit difficult to put a clear label on this German band's self released EP, it's mostly quite technical death metal, but it has a lot of prog elements, as well as some industrial keyboard motifs, it works most of the time, with some very few and far between glitches into over complication.

While the opening title song is pretty strong with some interesting guitar passages, its on the second and third tracks that the band shines, the second one makes some smart use of the keyboards, while the third is probably the heaviest track here, where the death metal really hits you in the face, the complexity of the band's arrangements sounds well placed here. The deep growled vocals are a bit flat at times, some diversity would have been nice, but the technical ability of the players involved keep this interesting. Towards the end of the track there's a definite nod to Symphony X with a pretty slick guitar riff.

When the band's slows down and uses a doom atmosphere it losses some of its strength, when the aggression is put into high gear things sound much better. The intro to the fourth track is a good example, more progy than most of the material; this could’ve used some clean vocals as well, since this isn’t tech death any more.

The last bit is a strange instrumental track revolved around some ambient keyboard work and what sounds like a flute or something, nice, but a bit unnecessary.

All-on-all, a pretty good release, that shows a lot more potential than many other bands out there, they need a better sound, this one is a bit muffled, and some more diversity with the vocals, but this has the potential for greatness.
