Katatonia: Viva Emptiness
Katatonia - Viva Emptiness - [Peaceville Records]

2003-04-12

“Viva Emptiness” is the 6th album of the Sweden's Katatonia.
I can't pinpoint to specific genre, which this album is related with – I can only say that the music is something between rock and metal – well crafted, done in a very good taste.
Since the moment I got this album i found myself taking it everywhere – from my home CD player to the car and again back to the home CD player.

The album begins with the song “Ghost of the sun” - a great song – and a even greater opening to this album.
This song has very good guitar riffs, it's based on clean vocals with an addition of some growling vocals in the background – I must say that I find Jonas Renkse as a well trained and professional vocalist.
The 2nd song - “Sleeper” sounds like a natural follow by song that has the quality of the fist one.
“Criminals” is a different case: Though the song begins with a relaxable rhythm – it has a very good progress to higher tempo and again back to the slower rhythm.
“Burn of the Remembrance” is my favorite song in this album. it has a very good clean guitar parts with distorted rhythm guitars on the background, great drum parts, great “Wah-Wah” effects.

The production is professional. the quality is unbeleivable, also a nice name to see in the credits is "additional editing by Dan Swano".

If i has to describe this album in one word than the word will be – “amazing”.
Not every day i have the opportunity to listen to an album and discover that each and every song has has such a high skills of writing & performing. I think that you have all reasons to buy this album. Great vocals, great music, great production – and if it's not enough it even has an amazing artwork cover, which is not a big surprise considering the artist – Travis Smith (Sleepless, Nevermore, Anathema, Opeth, Death etc.) a name we all know, especially in the world of metal.
