Coldwar: In The Suns Dead Rays
Coldwar - In The Suns Dead Rays - [Self-released]

2006-09-02

Ireland's Coldwar have their roots deeply in 80's death metal, combined with some classic hardcore breakdowns and some thrash, this 6 tracks EP isn’t very well produced, but the band's aggression and energy more than makes up for that.

Opener "War Rising" is a simple old school death metal track with basic riffing and a hardcore chorus, the raw vocals serve the song's aggression and heaviness, but keep in mind this is anything but crystal-sounding melodic death metal, its raw and dirty.

Best track here is "Dirty Protest", again, simple riffing done just right, with some great drum rhythms and a fine groove, the band's hateful approach towards religion is very well conveyed. "In The Name Of God" sounds as if written and recorded a good ten years ago, raw to the extreme, its more like old hardcore than anything else here. "The Messenger", however, has a certain groove to it that comes off as more modern.

This is mainly for old schoolers who like their metal hard and unkempt, early British death metal and hardcore are the main focal points, as such an album, this works well.
