Arthurkill: Addiction
Arthurkill - Addiction - [Attack Records]

2004-02-10

Arthurkill is a rather young band, hailing from New York, they may have picked a really awful name, but their music is quite the success story.

Starting off with a killer first track, “Open Your Mind” transfers you immediately to the world of metallic hard rock, smoothly accompanied by keyboards and programming which give the music a Nu Metal vibe, the band may not have invented the wheel, but it sure rocks like hell…

If forced to define the bands’ genre, I would consider it as hard rock with Nu Metal influences,
The guitars use massive distortions, the drums thunder loudly, and the vocalist has a melodic yet a bit gruff voice but the added layer of keyboards and programming, accompanied by the frequent scratching element, gives the band a nu metal feel that can’t be ignored.

What sets it apart from yet anther Linkin’ Park wannabe, is the fact that their heart is in the right place, so to speak, meaning, in traditional hard rock, and not loud pop music.

The second track is a surprise, a cover of Depeche Mode’s ‘It’s No Good’ of their previous album, ‘Ultra’, it’s a track that is quite in place for a metallic/electronic version, it starts off a bit weak. But builds itself nicely after the first chorus.

“Down” is a typical, angst-ridden song, which downs (pun intended) the track to an average
“Im an angry young American” status, but things shape up with the track “Closer To Free”,
A good, mellow acoustic track, which starts off like a “blur” song, but gets to be a solid hard rock song.

The band’s name and the albums cover? They have to go, they do not represent the band’s music in any way, and definitely do not do any justice to quite a good band, who I’m sure well hear about it the near future!
