A Fire Inside: Sing the Sorrow
A Fire Inside - Sing the Sorrow - [DreamWorks Records]

2003-10-25

A Fire Inside are one of the most unique and interesting Bands these last few years.
With time they managed to develop a certain distinguished style that can only be described as Punk-Goth or Dark-Punk.
AFI perform on stage about 7 years in a row (since they were 19) and kept recording albums during all that time, trying the new material as they tour.
“Sing the Sorrow” is very different from the first albums. Although they kept the typical Punk reckless attitude, this album has a very mature approach, especially the Gothic lyrics and abstract topics.
AFI has an incredible ability to combine between fast kitsch Punk and Gothic ballades to create a bumpy hybrid with depth unknown to Punk before.
They also tend to combine Heavy Metal elements like strong guitar riffs or a high technique solo.
Davey Havok has an excellent voice for Punk but he also blends in roars and whispers.
The production itself is a very big part of the unusual experience. Besides the smooth sound there are several intriguing additions such as Suzie Katayama cello part or guitar player Jade Puget keyboard programming and the short Industrial-Trance part in the middle of “Death of Seasons”. But with producers like Jerry Fin (Rancid, Green Day) and Butch Vig (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins) you can’t expect nothing short of amazing.
